A vaccination clinic held last Saturday in Akwesasne, aimed at strengthening community safety, led to 65 animals being vaccinated against the deadly rabies virus, and more. This was made by possible by a partnership between the Ontario SPCA and Humane Society and the Akwesasne community. Held on August 22nd at the Kawehno:ke Recreation Center, the clinic made essential veterinary care more accessible, with other core vaccines also offered and administered.
Access to rabies vaccines in particular are of critical importance. Usually fatal once clinical signs appear, the disease can infect any mammal. Up to date vaccinations for pets is one of the most effective ways to reduce the risk.
“We’re grateful for the opportunity to work alongside the Akwesasne Mohawk community to help keep pets healthy and protected,” says Bonnie Bishop, Eastern Regional Manager of Community Outreach Services with the Ontario SPCA and Humane Society. “With recent rabies incidents in the region, making rabies vaccination accessible is especially important. It was wonderful to see families take advantage of this clinic and take an important step toward protecting their beloved pets and the broader community.”
