There is no scientific evidence for why the third Monday in January is considered the the most depressing day of the year. Dubbed "Blue Monday", it has encouraged residents to talk more openly about mental health. In a move to raise more awareness about mental health to residents and students, Canadore College is offering a safeTALK program at the West Parry Sound campus. This program was funded by anonymous donors, which enables the program to be free to its participants.

The Gravenhurst Fire Department is giving away free smoke and co alarms to residents. 

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit's Medical Officer of Health Dr. Charles Gardner has issued a declaration of widespread influenza activity in Simcoe Muskoka. BRACEBRIDGE, ON – On January 8, 2018 Nipissing University and the Town of Bracebridge welcomed representatives from Dewey Educational Group as the new owners of the educational facility located at 125 Wellington Street. Nipissing University has worked closely with the Town of Bracebridge to identify a new owner for the facility since Nipissing announced plans to consolidate the University’s programming at their main campus in North Bay in June 2015. The University finalized the sale of the facility to Dewey Educational Group in December 2017 with the ownership transfer taking place in March 2018. Read more.
