Charging Station in Perth

The Town of Perth is thrilled to announce that two electric vehicle charging stations have been installed to service the increased number of electric vehicles on the roads. The installations complete what was a key item in the “Mayor’s Task Force on Climate Change.” Both charging stations (a total of 4 parking spots) are located on Colborne Street in the Tay Basin Parking Lot. Currently, there is no charge for the electricity consumed.

The stations are configured as:

1. Level 1 Station: provides charging through a 120 volt (V) and an Alternating Current (AC) plug. The Level 1 charging equipment is standard on vehicles and therefore is portable and does not require the installation of charging equipment. On one end of the cord provided is a standard, three-prong household plug. On the other end is a connector, which plugs into the vehicle. Depending on the battery technology used in the vehicle, Level 1 charging generally takes 8 to 12 hours to completely charge a fully depleted battery.

2. Level 2 Station: offers charging through a 240 V and an AC plug. These stations have a dedicated 40-amp circuit. Level 2 charging equipment is compatible with all electric vehicles and plug-in electric hybrid vehicles. Level 2 chargers have a cord that plugs directly into the vehicle. Depending on the battery technology used in the vehicle, Level 2 charging generally takes 4 to 6 hours to completely charge a fully depleted battery.

Regular parking fees apply for vehicles using the dedicated charging station parking spots. The current Traffic and Parking Bylaw #3961 is being updated to include the new spots, which are not intended for regular gas-powered vehicles.
