Perth and District Collegiate Institute (PDCI) swept the 2018 Upper Canada Cup Intermediate Soccer Championships on Tuesday, defeating the North Grenville District High School (NGDHS) Knights 4-3 in the boys’ final and 1-0 in the girls’ final.
The boys’ final came down to a shootout in which PDCI goalie Matthew Frazer held off the Knights. Fisher Horn, Braden Topping, Lucas Wheeler, and Chayce Warwick scored for PDCI in the shootout.
Ella Anderson got the sole goal for PDCI in the girls’ final. A strong performance by Stacy Manley in net gave her team the confidence to win.
PDCI Coach Tracey Tavares stressed the gold-medal performances were team efforts.
“There is no way we would have gone as far as we did today without strong performances by our goalies, but it was also really tricky for our opponents to get through our defensive line,” said Tavares. “We also had amazing passes and chip shots from our mids up to our forwards to create some scoring opportunities.”
Teams from PDCI, NGDHS, Thousand Islands Secondary School (TISS), and Tagwi Secondary School (TSS) participated in the boys’ event. PDCI, NGDHS, Rideau District High School, and TSS played in the girls’ event.
The Upper Canada Cup Intermediate Soccer Championships featured the top intermediate (Grades 7 and 8) school soccer teams from across the Upper Canada District School Board. Teams qualified for the tournament at previous regional events.
