Town of Cobourg

On behalf of Council and senior leadership I would like to express my condolences to the
family of the man who tragically passed by drowning this past Saturday in Cobourg. I would
also like to recognize the courage of the bystanders who tried to provide aid, and for the
tireless efforts of our Cobourg Police Service and Cobourg Fire Department staff who
completed the water rescue. It is unfortunately, during times of great sadness, when we
witness the heroic efforts of our emergency services and the true compassion of our
community.

While we value our connection to Lake Ontario here in Cobourg, it is important that we also
respect the dangers that are associated with natural bodies of water. The Town of Cobourg
encourages all users of the lake to follow safe water practices. The Lifesaving Society advises
the following:

Drowning is fast and silent but every drowning death is preventable with water safety
knowledge:
• Learn to swim (Swimming lessons are available through YMCA Northumberland).
• Always swim with a buddy.
• Children and non-swimmers should always be supervised around water.
• Wear a lifejacket whenever you are in a boat
