Cornerstone Family Violence Prevention Centre (Cornerstone), is excited to announce Walk A Mile is back and celebrating its 16th year. Cornerstone welcomes this year’s two lead sponsors, Canadian Tire Cobourg and Post Consumer Brands to the event taking place in downtown Cobourg on Saturday, October 14th

Walk a Mile is one of Cornerstone’s signature events that brings the community together to raise awareness and funds for Cornerstone’s programs and services. Over the past 15 years, Walk A Mile has raised a total of $499,991 that has helped Cornerstone support local families in rebuilding their lives after experiencing abuse. Walk A Mile is a family friendly walk that can be done by anyone in any footwear. “We are very excited to be celebrating our 16th year of Walk A Mile” said Cornerstone
Executive Director, Nancy Johnston. “Every year we look forward to seeing our community come together and show their support. That is what Walk A Mile is about, bringing neighbours, families, friends, and even pets, together in a fun way and creating positive change to end gender-based violence”, Johnston adds.

Walk A Mile is an event that brings organizations together, “At Post Consumer Brands, we are dedicated to supporting our community and the organizations that provide important services,” said Rhonda Traill, Post’s Training Coordinator. “Cornerstone’s Walk A Mile event brings our community together and we are proud to support this event and help women and children in our community who have experienced family violence” added Rhonda.

Cornerstone encourages everyone to join us on October 14th, to support women and children in our community who have been impacted by gender-based violence and help spread awareness about the issue. Previously, Peter Puglia, owner of Canadian Tire Cobourg, expressed his enthusiasm for this year’s event, “Canadian Tire Cobourg is committed to supporting local organizations that focus on families and children in our community,” said Peter Puglia. “We are pleased to support the 2023 Walk A Mile, an event that helps raise awareness and crucial funds for Cornerstone. We hope the community will support this year’s event and help Cornerstone with a successful fundraising effort,” added Peter.

In addition to the traditional walk, there will be breakfast served by the Cobourg Lions Club, coffee from McDonald’s Cobourg, a fun photo area, and a First Responders Challenge to help kick off the event. A registration fee of $20 for adults and $10 for those under 18 applies; however, walkers are
encouraged to collect additional pledges to support Cornerstone.

Long term Walk A Mile participant and supporter of Cornerstone, Scott MacCoubrey, is looking forward to this year’s event, “This year will be my 16th Walk A Mile in support of Cornerstone FVPC. Over the years, we have walked through every kind of weather, always complaining about how our feet hurt and always thoroughly enjoying the experience. The event has grown from the spectacle of seeing a few men awkwardly walking down King St. in red high-heeled shoes to a large, diverse
crowd that includes entire families and their pets. Every year the Walk gets bigger and better. See you on King St. on October 14th. I will be one of the guys struggling to stay on my feet”, said MacCoubrey.

Last year Cornerstone provided service to over 1800 women, children and youth through shelter, counselling, housing, and prevention programming. Walk A Mile plays a critical role in funding the various programs and services Cornerstone offers to turn fear into hope, and help local families rebuild their lives after experiencing abuse. The community is encouraged to come out and show their support.
