Fort Erie, ON – Niagara Parks, in partnership with the Niagara Parks Foundation, will host an all-ages community tree planting event on Saturday, October 28, to bring all generations together in pursuit of a greener future.

From 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., Old Fort Erie will be the site for Niagara Parks' Community Tree Planting Day, where members of the community are encouraged to participate in a local reforestation project to replace a number of ash trees that have been removed from the area.

This free, family-friendly event offers a unique opportunity for area residents to contribute to Niagara Parks’ annual goal of planting 5,000 trees across its properties to achieve 35% canopy cover by 2028, as a part of its Urban Forestry Management Strategy. Niagara Parks staff will provide the trees, tools and guidance to enable participants to plant their trees.

The Community Tree Planting Day is hosted in collaboration with Forests Ontario and is made possible through donations received through the Niagara Parks Foundation and the Toonies for Trees program. The Toonies for Trees initiative allows members of the public to donate directly to Niagara Parks’ tree planting efforts through the Foundation. The program has raised over $20,000 to date.

Forest Canopy Sustainability at Niagara Parks

As a part of Niagara Parks’ role as the environmental and cultural steward of the Niagara River corridor, an Urban Forestry Management Strategy was developed to recognize the vital role that forests play in our ecosystem. The strategy sets out five research-based goals and approaches that will help foster healthier and more resilient urban forests:

  • Maintain and Increase Canopy Cover
  • Increase Species and Habitat Biodiversity
  • Mitigate Adverse Impacts
  • Increase Awareness and Promote Stewardship
  • Improve Data Collection and Monitoring

The Community Tree Planting Day works to advance a number of these goals by encouraging area residents to learn more about local conservation efforts and participate in an initiative that positively impacts their community and the broader ecosystem. A variety of tree species will be available for planting to allow for a greater diversity of tree species in the area and ensure their long-term resiliency.
