Emaciated dog found in Welland, gives birth to puppies at shelter

On October 11th, a severely emaciated female shepherd type dog was found in the area of Niagara Street and
Elizabeth Street in Welland. The dog’s ribs and spine were clearly visible and she was missing much of her fur.

The dog, barely able to walk, was taken immediately to the Niagara SPCA’s Welland shelter where she was
assessed by one of the shelter’s veterinarians. Blood work was done, she was treated for anemia caused by a
severe flea infestation and was given fluids to treat her dehydration. The dog was placed on a strict food intake
regimen so as not to tax her already weakened body.

Two days after her arrival at the shelter, she gave birth to a litter of puppies under medical supervision. Most
survived though some were stillborn. Due to the mother’s weakness, the surviving puppies were placed in
foster care with shelter staff.

After delivering the puppies, the mother was transported to an emergency veterinary clinic to provide medical
care and 24 hour supervision. She is currently back in the NSPCA’s care and the staff will be supporting and
assisting her to the best of their ability to ensure she has the best chance possible.

Ontario’s Provincial Animal Welfare Services (PAWS) has been contacted regarding the matter.
Anyone wishing to donate to the care of the shepherd and her pups can do so online or at any shelter
locations.
