Freezing rain warning issued for Peterborough and surrounding communities

Environment Canada has issued a freezing rain warning for several communities in the Peterborough and Kawartha Lakes area Wednesday, Jan. 24.

The warning is in effect through Peterborough and Kawartha Lakes as well as Belleville, Quinte, Northumberland, Minden, Haliburton and Southern Haliburton County. Freezing rain is expected to begin in the afternoon and end in the evening. Ice accretion is expected to build up to two to five millimetres.

"Patchy freezing drizzle will affect the area today before a more significant area of freezing rain arrives this afternoon," the warning reads." The freezing rain may persist for several hours before changing to rain this evening."

Environment Canada warns surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots my become icy and slippery and the conditions may cause tree branches to break. Drivers are advised to slow down, watch for taillights ahead and maintain a safe following distance under slippery conditions.
