Cobourg Police Service (CPS) and Port Hope Police Service (PHPS) partner with Community Living & Respite Care Northumberland (Community Living) to participate in the 2024 Polar Plunge, joining police services, communities, and individuals across Ontario to support Special Olympics.
The team 'plunge' takes place on March 28. The community is invited to attend to cheer on the participants as they take on the icy waters of Lake Ontario, raising awareness and money to support over 26,000 Special Olympics athletes across Ontario!
Police services across Ontario have a strong relationship with Special Olympics, participating in events through the Ontario Law Enforcement Torch Run® (LETR) since 1987. These events raise awareness and funds to support Special Olympics programming and help enrich the lives of athletes with intellectual disabilities
through the transformative power of sport.
Over the past 37 years, the LETR has evolved to encompass a variety of fundraising platforms, including the annual Torch Run (in June) and the Polar Plunge. The Polar Plunge is one of the largest fundraising events of the calendar year for the LETR. This year's fundraising goal for the Ontario Polar Plunge campaign is $750,000.
Last year’s local Polar Plunge raised over $27,000 thanks to participant fundraising efforts and generous donors in the community. Combined with funds raised from the Torch Run in June 2023, over $32,900 went to support Special Olympics.
On March 28, 2024, at 11:00 a.m., at the Cobourg Marina Boat launch, CPS, PHPS, Community Living, and local Special Olympic athletes will take the plunge. Joined by the Cobourg Fire Department, Port Hope Fire Department, Northumberland Paramedics, municipal staff, community partners, and local councillors, the polar plunge event is sure to be entertaining and memorable, raising awareness and funds for a great cause!
