As part of Fraud Prevention Month, the Cobourg Police Service (CPS) is committed to raising awareness about common scams and empowering our community to protect themselves against fraudsters. This year’s theme, “20 years of fighting fraud: From then to now,” highlights how criminals have adapted their tactics using technology. We encourage everyone to take the time to learn about fraud, the warning signs, and how to protect yourself.

Recognize the Warning Signs

Fraudsters employ various methods to deceive individuals and exploit their trust. It is crucial to recognize the warning signs and stay informed. Here are some common scams to watch out for:
1. Phishing Emails and Calls: Be cautious of unsolicited emails or phone calls requesting personal information, passwords, or financial details.
2. Online Purchase Scams: Verify the legitimacy of online sellers before making purchases. Use secure payment methods.
3. Romance Scams: Be wary of online relationships that escalate quickly, especially if the other person asks for money or gifts.
4. Tech Support Scams: Fraudsters pose as tech support agents and claim your computer has issues. They ask for remote access or payment to fix nonexistent problems.
5. Investment Scams: Promises of high returns with little risk should raise red flags. Always research investment opportunities thoroughly.

Take Action
If you encounter suspicious activity or believe you’ve been targeted by fraud, follow these steps:
1. Stay Calm: Don’t panic. Take a moment to assess the situation.
2. Report It: Contact the Cobourg Police Service at (905) 372-6821 to report the incident. Even if you haven’t suffered a financial loss, reporting helps us track trends and prevent further scams.
3. Contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC): Reach out to the CAFC at 1-888-495-8501 or use the Fraud Reporting System (FRS) online, regardless of financial loss.

Spread the Word
Help spread awareness by sharing this information with family, friends, and colleagues. Together, we can build a resilient community that stands united against fraud.
