Niagara-on-the-Lake, alongside the Niagara Region and numerous other locations across North America, will experience a total solar eclipse on Monday, April 8, 2024.
During a total solar eclipse, the moon completely covers the sun, casting a shadow on Earth and creating a temporary period of darkness in the areas within the path of totality, which is expected to occur at 3:18 p.m. Given that Niagara-on-the-Lake and other municipalities in the area are situated within the path of totality, a considerable influx of visitors is anticipated.
"The solar eclipse reminds us of the beauty and power of the world around us," stated Lord Mayor Gary Zalepa. "I am confident that the Town's efforts in preparing for the solar eclipse will ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all residents and visitors to Niagara-on-the-Lake. It is an exciting event that the Town is prepared to welcome and accommodate."
The Town is encouraging the public to visit the Town's website at https://www.notl.com/solar-eclipse to learn more about the solar eclipse and how the Town is preparing for this rare celestial phenomenon.
"Town Staff have been meeting with neighbouring municipalities, the Niagara Region, and various stakeholders to ensure comprehensive plans are in place for the day of the solar eclipse," stated CAO Bruce Zvaniga. "Plans include safety measures, facility access for visitors, logistical aspects, and staffing all five Fire Stations to assist with potential emergency response efforts. Thank you to everyone for collaborating to ensure a safe and successful solar eclipse.”
With proper preparation and precautions, the solar eclipse can be an unforgettable and awe-inspiring event for all who experience it. Visit https://www.notl.com/solar-eclipse for solar eclipse information.
