Cornerstone Family Violence Prevention Centre (Cornerstone), is excited to announce Walk A Mile is back and celebrating its 17th year. Cornerstone is thrilled to welcome back this year’s generous presenting sponsor, Balder Corporation, to the walk taking place in downtown Cobourg on Saturday, October 5th during the Cobourg Harvest Festival.

Last year Cornerstone provided service to almost 2000 women, children and youth through shelter, counselling, housing, and prevention programming. The family friendly walk is one of Cornerstone’s signature events that brings the community together to raise awareness and funds for Cornerstone’s programs and services. Over the past 16 years, Walk A Mile has raised a total of $553,232, this incredible support from our community has helped local families rebuild their lives after experiencing gender-based violence. “We look forward to this event every year, it is a great way to see the community come together to support families. We encourage everyone to come out to enjoy a great morning and show your support, bring your friends, family, and even pets!” said Cornerstone Executive Director, Nancy Johnston. “This event would not be possible without all our incredible sponsors. Special thanks to Balder Corporation for their generous support as our Stiletto Sponsor this year, and many thanks to our two Challenge Sponsors, Canadian Tire Cobourg and Post Consumer Brands.” Johnston adds. The team at Balder Corporation is looking forward to the event, “Supporting the 17th annual Walk A Mile is our way of showing solidarity with those who have faced unimaginable challenges. We at Balder believe in Cornerstone's work and are committed to helping raise awareness and funds to prevent family violence and provide essential services to those in need.”, commented Balder Corporation.

Registration and breakfast will begin at 9:30am in downtown Cobourg. In addition to the walk, there will be breakfast provided by the Cobourg Lions Club, coffee and treats provided by Starbucks Cobourg, and a First Responders Challenge to help kick off the event before the Cobourg Legion Pipes & Drums lead the walkers through downtown. The walk can be done in any footwear and there is a registration fee of $20 for adults and $10 for those under 18; walkers are encouraged to collect additional pledges to support Cornerstone.

Post Consumer Brands is supporting the walk again this year, “Post Cobourg are always delighted to support a great cause that really matters to us and our community. We are proud to be supporting Cornerstone for the 3rd year with their ‘Walk A Mile’ fundraising event. They provide essential services and support to vulnerable individuals and families; their great work significantly impacts lives for the better. In keeping with our company values, we are proud to ‘Do right’ & ‘Bring joy’ to our community as a Cornerstone sponsor. Keep up the great work Cornerstone.” Post’s Operations Manager Elaine McAulay commented.

Scott MacCoubrey has participated in every Walk A Mile event and is returning for his 17th year, “For the 17th time, I will be participating in the Walk A Mile event in support of Cornerstone. Throughout the years, I have endured various weather conditions and have complained about my feet hurting while walking in red high-heeled shoes. Despite the challenges, I have thoroughly enjoyed the experience alongside other participants. The event has evolved from a few walking down King St. to a large, diverse crowd, including families and their pets. Each year, the event continues to grow and improve. Come join me on King St. on October 5th, where I will be one of the participants striving to complete the walk despite my sore feet.” said MacCoubrey.

Cornerstone encourages everyone to join us on October 5th to support women and children in our community who have been impacted by gender-based violence and help spread awareness about the issue.
