Cobourg Police Service (CPS) is proud to join Operation Lifesaver and partners across North America to raise awareness during the 21st annual Rail Safety Week from September 23 to 29, 2024.

With the theme of ‘There is No Undo Button,’ Rail Safety Week and Operation Clear Track (the single largest rail-safety law-enforcement initiative in North America) aim to reduce railway crossing and trespassing incidents in Canada and the U.S. — incidents which seriously injure or kill more than 2,100 people each year.

With five rail crossings and active rail lines that run along residential areas, nature trails, and parks in the Town of Cobourg, residents should take the time to learn about the risks.

• There are no whistles or horn signal warnings at the rail crossings in Cobourg. Exercise extra caution when crossing train tracks.
o Look both ways before crossing
o Don’t stop on the tracks.
o Never drive around lowered gates.

• Ignoring railway signs and signals or using tracks as a shortcut or a recreational path can have tragic consequences.
o Always use designated crossings and obey all signals.

Throughout the week, CPS will promote rail safety, sharing safety tips and Operation Lifesaver’s #STOPTrackTragedies videos and messages on social media.

On Wednesday, September 25th, as part of “Operation Clear Track,” CPS and CN Police Service will be in the community distributing rail-safety tip sheets to drivers, pedestrians and cyclists.

Let’s work together to Stop Track Tragedies.
