November 1st, 2024: Gillian’s Place invites the community to join them at Market Square in St. Catharines on Thursday, November 7th, from 7:00-9:00 am for the annual Wrapped in Courage Pancake Breakfast. November is Woman Abuse Prevention Month, and the Wrapped in Courage campaign calls on all Ontarians to show support for survivors by wearing a purple scarf and donating to a local shelter. For $20, guests will receive a Gillian’s Place scarf, pancakes and sausage, fruit, water/juice, and Starbucks coffee and/or tea. The Breakfast is proudly powered by Niagara College Culinary Services.
Last year, there was an increase in fatalities among women, girls, and gender- and sexually diverse individuals compared to the previous year. Gillian’s Place is concerned about the high rates of femicide and other forms of gender-based violence across Ontario, with over 49 femicides reported by the Ontario Association of Interval & Transition Houses (OAITH) since November 2023. Last year in Ontario, on average, every 6 days, a woman or child lost their lives due to men’s violence. Support and solidarity for survivors and victims of femicide have never been more critical to help prevent these heartbreaking tragedies.
During Woman Abuse Prevention Month, Gillian’s Place will be raising the Wrapped in Courage Flag in municipalities across North and West Niagara to enhance awareness in the communities it supports.
