Upper Canada Lodge Transition Brings New Opportunities for Community Use

Niagara Region's Upper Canada Lodge, a long-standing long-term care home in Old Town Niagara-on-the-Lake, will officially close on December 19, 2024. This closure follows the successful opening of two modern facilities: Gilmore Lodge in Fort Erie and the new Linhaven long-term care home in St. Catharines, where residents of Upper Canada Lodge have already transitioned to their new accommodations.

Parks Canada owns Upper Canada Lodge and has leased it to the Region while operating the long-term care home. Now officially vacating the site, Niagara Region is working with Parks Canada to ensure the building continues to be occupied and used appropriately within the community.

“For decades, Upper Canada Lodge has been a cornerstone of our community, providing essential care to our loved ones,” stated Lord Mayor Gary Zalepa. “On behalf of Council, thank you to Upper Canada Lodge, the Niagara Region, and Parks Canada for their meaningful collaboration. We look forward to Parks Canada bringing the vision for the future of this site to life.”

Parks Canada will look to repurpose the space to provide services that align with its mission to preserve and celebrate Canada's natural and cultural heritage. This transition ensures the facility will continue to play an important role in the community for years to come.

“As we look ahead, we’re excited to see this space evolve and continue to serve our residents in new and meaningful ways,” stated Acting CAO Kirsten McCauley. “The Town will work with Parks Canada as this location remains vital to the Niagara-on-the-Lake community.”
