Province Investing Over $15.7 Million in Critical Infrastructure to Ensure New Homes are Connected to Reliable Roadways

NIAGARA FALLS – The Ontario government is providing $11 million to the Regional Municipality of Niagara and $4,781,250 to the City of Niagara Falls to reconstruct and widen McLeod Road, facilitating the construction of up to 7,908 new homes in the City of Niagara Falls.  The funding is being delivered through the Housing-Enabling Core Servicing Stream under the Municipal Housing Infrastructure Program, which includes $400 million to help build, repair and maintain municipal roads, bridges and culverts that will promote housing growth in communities across Ontario.

"This is great news for Niagara, one of the fastest growing regions in the province," said Sam Oosterhoff, MPP for Niagara West.

"In this latest round of provincial funding for critical public infrastructure, including roads and bridges, municipalities across Ontario will be able to unlock more housing opportunities and support economic growth."

MPP Oosterhoff attended a series of municipal delegations at the annual conference of the Rural Ontario Municipal Association this week, meeting with mayors and councillors from across Niagara on local priorities for the region.

"Niagara continues to Grow Better Together and that growth demands that we ensure our communities are well served by sustainable and future-proof roads, bridges and other infrastructure," said Jim Bradley, Chair of the Regional Municipality of Niagara.

"The improvements to McLeod Road in Niagara Falls are a very welcome investment that will enable positive growth and benefit our entire Niagara community."

"Roads, sewers and sidewalks are not sexy and do not always make headlines, but they are necessary to grow and expand neighbourhoods to house families in our community," said Jim Diodati, Mayor of the City of Niagara Falls.

"We are very grateful for the Ontario government's support for this critical work that will have a major impact in Niagara Falls for years to come."

"To keep pace with growing communities across our province, our government is helping municipalities build more homes faster than ever before," said Hon. Kinga Surma, Minister of Infrastructure.

"Families and residents need safe and reliable roads and bridges to access these homes and travel safely to and from their destinations.  That is why we are making targeted, local investments through the Housing-Enabling Core Servicing Stream to support the construction of municipal roads, bridges and culverts that keep residents safe and foster stronger, more connected communities across Ontario."

The government is also investing $175 million to launch the Health and Safety Water Stream under the Municipal Housing Infrastructure Program.  This new stream will support projects that will protect homes and create resilient communities by building, rehabilitating and expanding aging water, wastewater, stormwater, flood and erosion infrastructure.

Through the Municipal Housing Infrastructure Program and the Housing-Enabling Water Systems Fund, Ontario is providing nearly $2 billion to support housing- and community-enabling infrastructure and build more homes across the province.

Quick Facts:

  • The government is investing $125.8 million under the Housing-Enabling Core Servicing Stream to projects in small, rural and Northern municipalities that do not have housing targets.  Of the total fifty-eight projects receiving funding, thirty-one projects will support these communities.

  • The government is delivering the most ambitious capital plan in Ontario’s history, with targeted investments totalling more than $191 billion over the next decade to build critical infrastructure and lay a strong foundation for future generations.
