April is Dig Safe Month, and Northumberland County is joining communities across Ontario to spread the word about the importance of safe digging practices. Following today’s County Council meeting, Northumberland County Warden Brian Ostrander, and Director of Public Works Denise Marshall, raised the Dig Safe flag on the County’s community flagpole as a visible reminder of this important safety campaign.

Whether you are planting a tree in your yard or breaking ground on a new construction project, knowing what is below you before you dig can prevent serious injury, service disruptions and costly repairs. Dig Safe Month is a province-wide initiative aimed at encouraging residents, businesses, and contractors to take the proper first step: contact Ontario One Call before any digging begins.

“Every time someone digs without checking what’s underground, they’re taking a risk,” says Warden Ostrander. “Dig Safe Month is a reminder that prevention starts with a simple step. By submitting locate requests, residents and contractors help protect critical infrastructure, ensure public safety, and avoid costly interruptions to essential services. It’s quick, easy and makes a big difference.”

Residents and contractors are reminded to “Call or Click Before You Dig.” Ontario One Call will provide information about buried cable lines, cables, and pipes so you can dig with confidence.
