The Niagara-on-the-Lake Museum is offering ‘history on wheels’ starting in May, giving participants the
opportunity to explore more of the Town’s unique heritage sights, and a natural expansion of the
Museum’s popular Old Town walking tours.
The tour was created by Steve Steele, a walking tour guide with the NOTL Museum for more than a
decade. “There is so much history in our town, and not all of it accessible by foot,” said Steele. “A bike
gives you the opportunity to reach other areas and tell more stories, all in a reasonable time frame.”
With his wife Dee, Steele mapped out a 10 km, 2-hour route, starting at the Museum on Castlereagh
Street with stops at The Commons, Fort George, Navy Hall, the Dock Area, and Fort Mississauga.
Described as a ‘medium challenge’ tour, on both gravel and paved roads, participants will hear stories
that include Indigenous and Black history, Settler stories, and the extraordinary military and industrial
history that defined this town.
“You also get a sense of the stunning beauty all around us,” said Steele. “The Niagara River and the
Commons make an incredible backdrop to all our history.”
