NIAGARA CATHOLIC OBTAINS 93 PER CENT CERTIFICATION IN ECOSCHOOLS PROGRAM

The Niagara Catholic District School Board is pleased to share that 98 per cent of our schools
participated in the Ontario EcoSchools program during the 2024-2025 school year, with 93 per
cent receiving certification. The good news was shared with trustees during the June 17 Board
Meeting, the final meeting scheduled for the 2024-2025 school year.

Niagara Catholic has been a leader in EcoSchools certification since 2007. In 2010, Niagara
Catholic became the first school board in Ontario to have 100 per cent participation and
certification. This was maintained the 2019-2020 school year.

We are extremely happy to note that this year, 22 Niagara Catholic schools obtained platinum

certification from EcoSchools this year; an increase over last year’s record high of 21 platinum-
certified schools. Twenty-eight schools earned gold certification, one school received silver

certification, and three schools were noted as participants. A list of schools and certifications is
attached.

“I am very proud of the commitment our students and staff have to our shared responsibility
for environmental stewardship,” said Camillo Cipriano, Director of Education. “Stewardship is
one of the core values embedded in our multi-year strategic plan. EcoSchools participation
aligns with Niagara Catholic’s Environmental Stewardship and Sustainability Policy, and goals
set globally for environmental stewardship and education. Thank you to everyone who
participated this year. You are helping to leave behind a better planet for your children and
grandchildren.”

Chair of the Board Danny Di Lorenzo also praised students and staff.
“I am always impressed by the generosity shown by our students and staff, and their willingness
look beyond themselves to make the world a better place for everyone,” said Chair Di Lorenzo.
“In this case, it’s about a commitment to stewardship and sustainability. Recognition for your
efforts is wonderful, but it is much more important to know that you are leaving your footprints
behind on a healthier planet. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, congratulations to everyone
involved for your participation in the Ontario EcoSchools program this year. We are very proud
of you.”
