August 5–31, 2025 | Opening Reception: Sunday, August 17, 2:00–4:00 p.m.
The Niagara Pumphouse Arts Centre is proud to present In and Out of This World, a solo
exhibition by well-regarded, Niagara-on-the-Lake artist Marilyn Cochrane, on view from August
5 to 31, 2025, in the Joyner Gallery. The public is warmly invited to attend the opening reception
on Sunday, August 17, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., where guests will have the opportunity to meet
the artist and experience her extraordinary body of work while enjoying wine and nibbles.
In and Out of This World brings together paintings of planetary orbs from outer space and
images of the beauties of nature here on Earth. “Each is a reflection and connection to the
other,” says Cochrane. “These paintings all allude to the mystery and awe of the universe, and
to the beauty of nature that surrounds us on Earth.”
The artist describes her painting style as “Poetic Realism,” aiming to create a highly realistic
image from afar, with abstracted texture and brushstrokes taking over up close. She works from
her own photos and her imagination, calling her summertime blooming photo shoots
“engrossing adventures into the field.” She paints with many glazes of both transparent and
opaque hues, building a richness of colour and texture. Shifting from thick paint application to
delicate touches, she creates a lively surface full of expressive strokes.
Her fascination with the night sky and deep space photos of our galaxy is a central influence on
her work. “It is a constant reminder to me of the preciousness of our home planet, and I hope
that these images will resonate intriguingly with the viewer,” Cochrane explains. “The full
blooming flower canvases can draw the viewer in, beckoning the senses with their rich colours
and cascading forms. I hope that these paintings offer a joyful haven of contemplation, so
welcome in this super-paced world.”
Marilyn Cochrane holds a Fine Arts degree from McGill University, graduated with honours from
the Ontario College of Art and Design, and studied painting at the American School of Art in
Paris. She is an elected member of the Society of Canadian Artists and the Society of Canadian
Painters in Watercolour. Her award-winning work is part of numerous private and corporate
collections across Canada and the United States.
In and Out of This World is a celebration of nature’s beauty and the majesty of the universe—a
space for reflection, wonder, and joy. Niagara Pumphouse Arts Centre is located at 247 Ricardo
Street in Niagara-on-the-Lake. For more information, visit
