Welland, ON – The City of Welland is taking a major step to improve safety on residential streets by launching the installation of new 40 km/h speed limit signs across the city.
The new signage, which begins installation next week, will introduce a default 40 km/h speed limit on all local and minor collector roads.
This initiative, approved by Welland City Council during the 2025 budget process, reflects a strong commitment to making neighbourhoods safer for everyone, particularly pedestrians, cyclists, and families.
“Slower speeds save lives, and we know this to be true,” said Ali Khan, manager of transportation engineering. “By reducing the speed limit in our neighbourhoods, we’re taking an important step to improve road safety and quality of life for Welland residents. Driving habits won’t change overnight, but over time, we’ll see these speed reductions really take effect.”
Implementation overview:
- Signs reading “Maximum 40 Area Begins” and “Maximum 40 Area Ends” will be installed at or near the intersection of every residential street that meets either a major collector or arterial road.
- Streets internal to those areas will not receive signage, as the default speed limit will apply throughout.
- Installation is expected to be completed by October 30, 2025.
Lower residential speed limits prevent serious injuries, create calmer neighbourhoods, and encourage active lifestyles. Success depends on drivers embracing the change; it's a shared responsibility between the City and the community and more can be done together than individually to build a safer community.
Residents are encouraged to watch for the new signs and drive accordingly.
