Welland, ON – The City of Welland, in partnership with the Job Gym and the Downtown Welland Business Improvement Area (WDBIA), is pleased to announce the launch of a pilot program focused on improving the appearance and cleanliness of Welland’s downtown core.
Two custom-built maintenance tricycles officially hit the streets this week as part of a 16-week initiative aimed at enhancing the public realm through daily litter pickup, weeding, and light maintenance. The project supports the City’s strategic priority of Livability by creating a more connected, welcoming, and accessible urban environment.
“This initiative is an innovative and community-first approach to beautifying our downtown,” said Julia Ciolfi, economic development officer. “By investing in people and equipment, we’re creating local employment opportunities, keeping our streets clean, and fostering civic pride.”
The tricycles, purchased by the City’s Economic Development Office and manufactured by Canadian suppliers, are outfitted with mounted bins and storage compartments. They will be operated by two seasonal general labourers hired through Job Gym Employment Services, with wages funded by Fedcap Canada. The workers will cover the entire WDBIA catchment area seven days a week.
As a dynamic partnership, the WDBIA will oversee daily operations, while Job Gym provided health and safety training—including needles and sharps handling—to ensure staff are well-prepared for their roles. The seasonal workers were selected through a joint interview process between the City and WDBIA.
The tricycles include advertising space for local businesses, providing a sponsorship option that could help sustain or grow the program in future years.
This pilot exemplifies how strategic partnerships and innovative thinking can revitalize public spaces and strengthen community connections. While it complements existing City services, the initiative adds a focused, high-visibility presence that reflects Welland’s values of efficiency, innovation, and integrity.
