Niagara Falls, ON— Niagara Parks, working in collaboration with Parks Canada, will install two coastal wetland fish habitats at Black Creek in Fort Erie and Boyer’s Creek in Niagara Falls. Construction will begin in early September, with tree staging already underway. Work at both sites is expected to be completed by November 1, 2025.
Historically, over 75% of coastal wetlands along the Canadian side of the Niagara River have been lost, significantly impacting local fish populations. The goal of this joint project is to improve fish populations and biodiversity in the Niagara River by anchoring logs into the riverbed. The habitat structures, made from repurposed large rocks and woody debris from downed trees, will improve the nearshore environment while maintaining water levels and access to local creeks and shorelines.
This project builds upon previous work completed by Niagara Parks, with seven other coastal habitat sites successfully established along the upper Niagara River to date. This important work has resulted in increased fish populations and continues to attract diverse bird species such as terns, egrets and herons. Traffic Considerations During construction, visitors may encounter log debris on nearby roads and experience occasional minor traffic delays. Access to certain areas and adjacent parking lots may also be temporarily restricted.
Niagara Parks appreciates your patience and cooperation as we complete these important improvements.
