The storm that night produced 35-foot waves and 60 mph winds, overwhelming the ship and leaving no survivors. Moved by the story, Gordon Lightfoot went on to write "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald"—a deeply emotional ballad that remains a defining part of his legacy.
