A group of dogs that were transferred from a remote Northern community near the Manitoba border to the Ontario SPCA Leeds & Grenville Animal Centre are now looking for a new home.
The five dogs were among 21 that were flown into Thunder Bay by North Star Air Ltd. on April 27 on a journey to Central Ontario to find new homes. The transfer is the result of a partnership between the Ontario SPCA, various Year of the Northern Dog partners and a remote community near the Manitoba border that wanted to find homes for its community dogs.
The Northern dogs at the Leeds & Grenville Animal Centre have undergone health checks, vaccinations and spay/neuter procedures, and are available for adoption today.
“These are beautiful, friendly dogs who are looking for their forever homes,” says Marianne Carlyle, Manager, Leeds & Grenville Animal Centre. “We are honoured to have played a role in this re-homing initiative and encourage members of our community to come out and meet these sweet dogs and learn how they can get involved in our Year of the Northern Dog program.”
The transfer that brought these dogs to Brockville was made possible thanks to the vision of the leadership and volunteers in the community, the collaboration of volunteers in Thunder Bay from various groups such as Northern Reach and Finding Them Homes - James Bay Pawsitive Rescue, as well as the North Bay and District Humane Society, the Peterborough Humane Society, North Star Air Ltd., Quinte Humane Society and the Northumberland Humane Society.
To bring awareness, attention and action to Northern dog overpopulation, the Ontario SPCA has declared 2018 the Year of the Northern Dog. In response to many caring and compassionate Northern communities, the Ontario SPCA and its partners have developed a network of individuals, organizations and communities aimed at bringing awareness to the issue and working alongside Northern communities with a common goal – to change lives.
