Community Event - Windsor/Leamington - Discover Olde Sandwich Town 's heritage
Under the auspices of Windsor Lodge 403 (https://www.windsorlodge403.com/windsor-lodge), an opportunity is presented to discover the history of Olde Sandwich Town through a guided tour of St. John’s Anglican Church Cemetery - generations of families who built this frontier community along the south shores of the Detroit River.
The FREE - all welcome tour, (compromising of some headstones dating from 1793) is presented by local military historian and author, Gene Lotz pulls back the curtain on the “frontier” settlement of Olde Sandwich Town.
Lotz will touch upon the life and times of distinguished European “gentry”, British loyalists, enterprising merchants and astute politicians; the militia, French explorers, freed Black American refugees, Indigenous peoples and stout-hearted pioneers who settled the land, tilled the fields, and plied their trades, who built their homes, raised their families, practised their faith and contributed to the eco-social vibrancy of this Western District community along the south shores of the Detroit River.
Additionally, this heritage engagement integrates how preservation and conservation are instrumental to fostering the valued elements of our national heritage and Canada’s diverse identity.
