Sophisticated Swing is a big band consisting of nineteen musicians and vocalists from the Golden Horseshoe area who work hard to create an outstanding big band sound. We love to play and sing music that audiences want to hear.

Founded in 1999 by trombonist Carl Hamilton, Sophisticated Swing offers a new approach to musical entertainment. Here, finally, is a big band that plays more than the traditional swing music of the 40's and 50's. We also have a large repertoire of the best tunes of the 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's and to the present.

Our concert "Sophisticated Swing: 25 Years of Big Band Magic" is a captivating celebration of the enduring allure and evolution of big band music over a quarter-century. This genre, deeply rooted in the vibrant jazz scene of the early 20th century, has continually captivated audiences with its dynamic rhythms, rich harmonies, and the sheer spectacle of a large ensemble in full swing. Over the past 25 years, big band music has experienced a renaissance, with musicians infusing contemporary elements while honouring the classic sounds of legendary figures such as Duke Ellington, Count Basie, and Benny Goodman. This era has seen a revival not just in performance, but also in the innovative arrangements and compositions that keep the genre fresh and relevant. "Sophisticated Swing" pays homage to this musical journey, highlighting the influential bands and artists who have contributed to the genre's lasting legacy and its ability to unite listeners across generations with its joyous, sophisticated sound.
