We are thrilled to announce the completion of a very special project: Reflections on Old Victoria County: In Tribute to R.B. Fleming.

A rock on the shores of Sturgeon Lake said to be a meeting place between Samuel de Champlain and the First Peoples. A Black barber who made his home in Lindsay for a few years in the 1860s. Swedish furniture-makers who took up residence in Fenelon Falls half a century ago. Strawberry, ham, and salad suppers in Valentia. Italian railway builders who were viewed with suspicion by the local press. An internationally infamous swindler who made his home in Bobcaygeon. An area choir that entertained a vice-regal audience.

These are but some of the stories covered in this book. Reflections on Old Victoria County: In Tribute to R.B. Fleming is a compilation of tales and anecdotes about the region now known as Kawartha Lakes. Originating as a project of the late Dr. Rae Fleming (1944-2022), this volume serves as a tribute to his legacy as a distinguished historian, writer, and friend.

You are cordially invited to attend the launch of Reflections on Old Victoria County on Saturday May 18th, 2024, at St. Andrew’s Church, Lindsay, ON, from 2:00-4:00 p.m., with remarks at 3:00 p.m. Stay awhile and mingle with friends over light refreshments — including some of the heirloom recipes from our community that have been published in the book.

On the first weekend of May every year, Jane’s Walk, a free festival of volunteer-led walks take place in hundreds of cities around the world including  Kingston. These walks encourage us to discover more about our city and to connect with our neighbours

In Kingston this year,  there will be 19 uniquely different walks; 7 of them deal with new subjects or areas of the city. The walks will include various aspects of human life and wildlife, past and present. They will lead us through greenspaces and historic neighbourhoods and a couple will take us to final resting places.

Details of the walks, times, leaders and meeting place maybe found here https://janeswalkkingston.wordpress.com/
