Public Notices/Announcements - Windsor/Leamington - City of Windsor Makes Sandbags Available

City of Windsor officials continue to monitor water levels along Lake St. Clair, the Detroit River and Little River. While there is no imminent threat at this time, water levels are high enough to warrant concern and preparations.

For that reason, the City of Windsor is moving forward with plans to make sand and bags available to residents in the area of greatest risk of flooding at this time. These homes are located along the north side of Riverside Drive from George Avenue east to our border with the Town of Tecumseh.

The City of Windsor is committed to working with all residents in East Windsor who could potentially be impacted by seasonal flooding. This week, a detailed letter from the City Engineer was distributed to 300 at-risk homes with additional information and advice on how to protect residential properties. A further 17,000 will receive an informational flyer within the next week.

Residents from those addresses are asked to call 311 (open 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday to Friday), and an appointment can be set up to meet City staff at the sandbag station. Appointments will be scheduled between 7:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Monday to Friday, beginning Friday, April 3, 2020.

The sandbag station is located at 9410 Little River Road (just west of the Little River Bridge and the roundabout). Residents attending the sandbag station will be asked to show proof of address (mail or billing information showing address) and to check in with the attendant each time they visit. The sandbag station will have a City staff member on hand, but the bags and filling of the bags are the responsibility of residents

As per advice from the Windsor Essex County Health Unit, residents are reminded to practice social distancing when filling sandbags, and stay 6 feet away from anyone else who may be filling sandbags.

While these noted conditions for shoreline flooding are not related to infrastructure, helpful details on basement flooding prevention are available on the City of Windsor website.

Yard waste will only be collected in cardboard boxes, paper yard waste bags or garbage cans/pails. Plastic bags will not be accepted.

Yard waste includes garden waste, grass clippings, tree/hedge trimmings and leaves:

  • Garden waste includes flowers, vegetables, plants, fruit and leaves.
  • Grass clippings - try grasscycling and leave grass clippings to decompose on your lawn after mowing. If you place grass clippings out for collection, place in cardboard boxes, paper yard waste bags or garbage cans/pails.
  • Tree and hedge trimmings must be tied in bundles with a maximum length of 4 ft. and maximum diameter of 2 ft.

In an effort to stop the spread of COVID-19 and keep people home, the Ontario Government has ordered the closure of all outdoor recreational amenities, which includes the Leamington Marina and boat ramp.

The Municipality of Leamington will continue to follow directions from the Ontario Government; however, at this time, there has not been a decision to close the Marina for the 2020 season.

In the event it is determined that the Marina will not be opening on May 1, 2020 as scheduled, the Municipality will provide further communication at that time.
