Windsor’s Charity Chix are back with another exciting fundraiser they are calling “Bollywood Nights” in support of the Children’s Safety Village. This event will feature Bollywood film clips and music, hearty hors d’oeuvres, henna tattoos, bindis and bangles as well as a premium silent auction and Shinola watch raffle. The first annual Community Safety Champion Awards will be presented at this event to members of our community who have worked to ensure safer neighbourhoods and who support children’s safety programs.

The Charity Chix organization comprises a dynamic group of business and professional women whose mission is to support lesser known, worthy charitable causes in our community and around the world.

Proceeds from this event will support programs delivered through The Safety Village.

The Windsor Essex Environment Committee is joining various local and regional experts to explore the significant issues surrounding species at risk road mortality within the Ojibway Prairie Complex and other areas in Windsor and Essex County in the latest Green Speaker Series.  Discussion will include current measures taken to protect Species at Risk, as well as Eco Passage project examples and other options to decrease road mortality.

Panel experts include:

  • Jonathan Choquette, Lead Biologist – Ojibway Prairie Reptile Recovery from Wildlife Preservation Canada (currently researching and implementing protection strategies in Windsor)
  • Rick Levick, President of the Long Point World Biosphere Reserve Foundation home to Eco Passage projects
  • Kari Gunson, Principal Road Ecologist at Eco-Kare International and author of the “Wildlife on Roads: A Handbook”
  • Dinu Filip, President of ACO Systems and installer of Eco Passages.

The City of Windsor is seeking nominations for the 2020 Built Heritage Awards.

City Council has traditionally recognized excellence in long-time heritage stewardship and/or recent well-done rehabilitations through the presentation of the annual Built Heritage Awards. New this year, the City is opening the nominations to the public!

The public are invited to submit their ideas through the online nomination form, or fill in the PDF nomination form and email it to planningdept@citywindsor.ca by November 24, 2019. Suggested nominations will be screened by City staff and the Heritage Committee according to the criteria for the awards noted below.

The chosen nominations will be presented with the 2020 Built Heritage Awards at City Council in early 2020.

Criteria:

  • Property must located within the City of Windsor.
  • The property must have cultural heritage value or interest. However, the property does not have to be listed on the Municipal Heritage Register or designated in the Ontario Heritage Act.
  • The property can be of any use (residential, commercial, institutional, etc.)
  • Active Windsor Heritage Committee members are not eligible for nomination.
  • Work must adhere to the Standards and Guidelines for the Conservation of Historic Places in Canada.
