Keep your eyes to the skies, kites will be flying over downtown Essex Centre on Saturday, September 21 as the Town of Essex A.C.T. Committee presents the first Essex Kite Festival.

This free event is the perfect way to wrap up summer. All participants will get a free kite to fly and the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities including contests, games and more.  Free snacks will also be provided.

Essex Kite Fest takes place at Heritage Gardens and the Essex Railway Station in Essex Centre from 11:00am to 2:00pm on Saturday, September 21, weather permitting.

“Kite flying is one of the oldest forms of entertainment, dating back over 3,000 years, and it proves you don’t need a smart phone to have fun. This festival is a great chance to unplug, come together, and enjoy some quality time with friends, family and the wider community,” said Cynthia Cakebread, Manager Recreation and Culture.

Relive the experience of attending a large city silent movie theatre in the 1920s. Before sound was added to film, large pipe organs would provide the audio backdrop. A comedy short will be followed by the iconic performance of Mr. Lon Chaney as the phantom in the 1925 version of The Phantom of the Opera. World-renowned and Juno award winning organist, Ian Sadler, of Stratford, ON, will accompany both films. Arrive early and hear Ian play Scott Joplin rag tunes on the piano from 7:45 to 8:00 p.m.

The Casavant pipe organ of Central United Church, Sarnia is the largest pipe organ in three counties, including the City of Windsor. Come hear this grand instrument in one of its last public performances. The congregation, the oldest in Sarnia, will cease its 188-year old ministry by Fall, 2020. The organ will be shuttered, packed up and leave Sarnia.

Come dressed in Roaring Twenties costume and receive a raffle ticket. Raffle winners (5) will receive $20 (the cost of admission!).

General Admission.  No reserve seating (except for groups of 10 or more). Doors open at 7:30 p.m.

Ticket prices:  Adults: $20;  Youth (12-16):  $12; Children (11 and under): $7.
