Peterborough Historical Society public lecture: Speaker Dennis Carter-Edwards. A city's waterworks is largely out of sight and normally attracts little attention. However, the history of waterworks is central to understanding the history of urban growth and planning. In the late nineteenth century, Peterborough faced a crisis. Lack of a water works system placed the town at risk of destruction from fire while the absence of a sewer system created a serious health risk from water borne diseases. A ready supply of clean water was urgent. Dennis Carter-Edwards, retired Parks Canada historian, will explore how the city fathers, leading citizens and provincial authorities helped Peterborough achieve these essential services. Peterborough Lion's Community Centre, 347 Burnham Street.

October is Autism Acceptance Month in Canada. In honour of it, we'll be staging a very special fundraiser on October 7th with some very special talent. The Broadway Pleasers, two of Cornwall's most gifted and respected musicians, will play and sing a selection of beloved songs from the world of musical theatre for you. Consisting of pianist Moe Lemieux (best known locally for his longtime quartet) and vocalist Stephen Vallières, they've amassed a loyal and devoted following in Cornwall and SD&G since they began performing together in 2005. We're thrilled and honoured to have them grace our stage.
Joining them will be two more of Cornwall's most highly regarded musicians: vocalist Heather Mahon (whom you'll remember from our productions of Guys and Dolls and Chicago) and bassist Peter Kilpatrick, both of whom will add their considerable talents to the evening.
