Community Event - Kingston - Water on Fire: A Fire Show on Water May 6
Water. Fire. Circus. Sunset.
Calliope is THRILLED to present Water on Fire with NorthFire Circus (Chaos to Calm, The Witches). Through our collaboration, we have been exploring our relationship with water and fire, and their mutually destructive nature... this new show is a different piece of theatre that incorporates dance, fire, and music to tell a story.
RSVP to meet our performers, get up-to-date news on show details, and help us spread the word that a spectacle on water is coming to Kingston!
Grab your seat in Douglas Fluhrer Park, along the K&P trail starting at 7:30pm - the show will start approximately 15-20 minutes later.
This show is free for the public to attend. If you would like to make a donation to Calliope, please visit calliopecollective.com or email info @ calliopecollective dot com

Community Event - Kingston - Back to Life - Spoken Word, Performance Workshop
The final part of our Spoken Word Poetry Project is all about the performance!
Award-winning Poet, Writer, and Dancer, Abena Beloved Green returns as we continue our exploration of healing through the pandemic by connecting to nature and expressing it with the Spoken Word.
In our first two workshops in September and March (you do not need to have attended to participate in part 3) the focus was on writing for the spoken word with an introduction to the performance. In this class, Abena will expand on the performance element process.
Free for any participants of parts 1 and 2, sliding scale for those just joining us.
Abena seeks to create, engage, and elevate through words and movement. She will continue to draw on her knowledge of multiple artistic disciplines to guide participants through the process of performing their creative pieces.
The intention is to have you leave with a piece ready for performance and a dozen participants will have the opportunity to complete a proper recording of their writing.
For those who did not participate in parts one and two, you will receive writing prompts before the workshop so you will have something to work on and refine during the afternoon.
If the pandemic has left you feeling isolated, introverted, or in a creative rut, this class is here to reignite your urge for artistic expression.
All levels of experience and performing discipline welcome - you do not need to be a "poet" or even a "writer" - this is to guide folks through a process of gratitude and expression.
Special thanks to the Ontario Arts Council and the Kingston Arts Council/City of Kingston Arts Fund for supporting this project.

Public Notices/Announcements - Peterborough/Lindsay - Peterborough Astronomical Assoc. Monthly Zoom Mtg.
The monthly meeting of the Peterborough Astronomical Association's (PAA) will take place online May 6th, instead of at our customary location of the Rotary Education Centre/Guest Services Building, Riverview Park Zoo, but instead in your own home. Even Covid-19 cannot stop the spread of information and knowledge by the members of the PAA. Our work around involves using a platform called Zoom. To participate just make sure that in advance, you opened a (free) Zoom account on whatever iphone or tablet device you wish to participate with and then contact https://www.peterboroughastronomy.com/zoom_register.php for the password and link to our evenings presentations.
Our “Novice Astronomy Classes” are focused on the practical aspects of learning about astronomy. You will be introduced to astronomy related subjects at a very basic level, but in a logical sequence. This month's session is a continuation of our Astronomy Class Series, Lesson 4 in the series, “Our Solar System”. You will be introduced to our Sun and eight planets. Their size, distances and physical characteristics will be briefly discussed. There are many other objects resident to our solar system that we need to consider: moons, dwarf planets, comets and asteroids. Finally we look at the origins of life and the possibility that it may be lurking elsewhere in our solar system. Come join us at the PAA’s next Novice Astronomy Class to tour our vast and spectacular solar system!
If you are even remotely interested, be on-line by 6:00 p.m. to see what you can learn about the Universe around you. The classes will run about 45 minutes each session, before our regular meeting resumes. There’s no obligation to stay for the meeting that follows, but you are more than welcome.
Shortly after 7:00 p.m. there will be a brief meeting. The main presentation for this month will be an “in house” array of astronomy topics. We will be introducing “Telescope Roundtable”. As part of our “Member’s Night” feature, member Walter Gebhardt, will talk about his telescope journey. There might be some interesting “gadgets” presented as well. We guarantee you will see and learn things you never knew existed. A feast for the eyes and a thirsty mind. The price is right…it costs you nothing but your time.
The Sky This Month will be posted on our club website for all to access. There will also be the usual opportunities to have your questions answered, at no cost. All we ask is that you register in advance at https://www.peterboroughastronomy.com/zoom_register.php This is an all ages meeting and the venue is totally barrier free. Just relax at home and “live and learn” as they say. Also, you don’t need a telescope to participate, but a curious mind helps.
