The Victory Garden at The Brown Homestead is a heritage based community garden that encourages sustainable gardening, education, and outdoor recreation through the planting and maintenance of a replica Victory Garden with our harvest to be donated to a local food bank.
Victory Gardens, also known as war gardens, were fruit, herb, and vegetable gardens grown by Canadians who remained on the homefront during the First and Second World Wars to help supplement food rations and improve community morale. They hold an important place in Canadian history in times of crisis, and the 2020βs have brought ample incentive for the resurgence of victory gardens here at The Brown Homestead and in your own backyard!
Come join us to get your hands dirty, socialize and learn from local horticulture and history experts. When youβre done, youβll be ready to cultivate your own victory gardens at home.
Through free weekly meetings (beginning April 30th) and bi-weekly workshops and guest speaker appearances on alternating weeks, the Victory Garden will be an inclusive, sustainable, and fun weekend activity for the Niagara community! All ages are invited to participate.
