Irish-born John Macoun was Canada's foremost field naturalist. The self-taught botanist catalogued 100,000 plants, which are now housed in the National Herbarium of Canada at the Canadian Museum of Nature in Ottawa.
It was during this time teaching at Albert College in Belleville that he decided to devote his life to botany. He was appointed Chair of Natural Science at the college in 1869. John Macoun was a major influence in the routing of the Canadian Pacific Railway.
In this free Zoom webinar, Historical Society President Richard Hughes takes a look at the life of John Macoun.

Cranberry Day Saturday, September 25, 2021 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM
Join us in Callander on Saturday, September 25th, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., as we celebrate the return of Cranberry Day along the municipality’s Cranberry Trail.
Sample some treats, have a bite and find unique products at our vendor booths in the parking lot where there will also be kids’ activities. Then, stroll along beautiful Cranberry Trail, which will take you to the marsh where there will be a display area and viewing platform. Enjoy live music including Don and Friends’ band in the parking lot, as well as buskers along the trail.
Turn west off Pinewood Park Drive at the north end of Callander and follow the signs. However, there is limited parking on site, so free shuttle bus service from the Callander Community Centre at the corner of Pinewood Park Dr. and Swale St. is available. Pets on a leash are welcome on the shuttle bus. We look forward to seeing you there!
Current Public Health COVID-19 protocols will be in effect.
