2024 Holiday Train
A little rain didn’t keep hundreds of people from coming out to enjoy some live musical entertainment when the Canadian Pacific Kansas City Holiday Train pulled into Chatham on Monday. Brenda Leclair, Executive Director for Outreach for Hunger was ecstatic to receive $4500 for the food bank especially during this time of the year.
Chatham Kent and University of Windsor Joint Announcement
The University of Windsor and the Municipality of Chatham-Kent have officially launched a strategic partnership that will drive regional innovation and support sustainable growth through enhanced educational opportunities and collaborative research. The Memorandum of Understanding was signed today by representatives from both institutions, formalizing a commitment to address community needs, create meaningful learning experiences, and foster economic resilience across Chatham-Kent.

Local Legend Michelle Wright Honoured with Snowplow Naming and Artist Tribute
Local country music legend Michelle Wright joined municipal officials on Friday, November 15 to unveil a snowplow that has been named in her honour. The name of the plow is ‘Snow Wright’ and it will be keeping the roads of Chatham-Kent snow-free in and around Michelle’s hometown of Merlin. Michelle was also honoured with a portrait by local artist Lucy Thrift, who has illustrated local legends such as Fergie Jenkins and Bill Atkinson. The illustration, which is done entirely in pencil, will hang in the Civic Centre atrium in Chatham.

Unveiling New Sculpture in Downtown Chatham
In an effort to create more points of interest across Chatham-Kent, the municipality has unveiled a new sculpture in downtown Chatham. The latest art piece created by Bothwell native Mike Winia has been installed at Zonta Park. The 13-foot-tall, 4,000-pound wood carving depicts a large version of the Crowfest mascot, nicknamed Russell the Crow. The sculpture and photo installation was carved entirely by chainsaw out of a CK-grown White Oak tree. Chatham-Kent Mayor Darrin Canniff said the crow sculpture is the first of many large carved installations that will be erected in downtown areas across Chatham-Kent. He said the carvings, which will reflect each community’s history, will be unveiled sometime in the spring or summer of 2025.

CK Lifts Emergency Order For Wheatley
An emergency order has finally been lifted in Wheatley, more than three years after a gas explosion rocked the town’s downtown core. During a ceremony at the Chatham-Kent Civic Centre on Thursday, municipal staff and politicians gathered to sign an order terminating the emergency in Wheatley. “It’s been a very emotional time for everybody. We can’t ignore the fact that the community has been resilient, they’ve been passionate,” said Fire Chief Chris Case. The emergency order was issued on July 19, 2021, following the detection of hydrogen sulphide gas. Just over a month later, on August 26, 2021, a gas explosion destroyed several properties around 15 Erie St. N, resulting in significant evacuations.
CK Community Hub Moving Forward
The municipality will now move forward with final design plans for the Chatham-Kent Community Hub following a marathon council meeting that saw nearly two dozen deputations opposing the project. During Monday’s meeting, Chatham-Kent Council voted 11-5 in favour of awarding a $2,177,683.46 contract to Architecturra Inc. for the completion of the detailed designs for the multi-year project that would see the Chatham-Kent Civic Centre, CK Public Library and CK Museum amalgamated into the former Sears building in downtown Chatham.
