Cobourg Garden Club Annual Plant Sale

09:00 AM — 11:00 AM

The Cobourg Garden Club will be holding its annual plant sale at the Columbus Community Centre, 232 Spencer St. East, at D’Arcy on Saturday May 17, from 9 to 11 am.

This plant sale is always very popular.  For some years the plant sale has been held on the Saturday of the Victoria Day weekend, a weekend traditionally set aside for gardening!  Cobourg residents know that the selection of locally grown plant material offered by Club members is worth lining up for!   There will be shrubs, trees, house plants, perennials, annuals, herbs, canna lily and dahlias bulbs, and a good number of native plants, not generally available at commercial nurseries.  As usual, there will be a good selection of heritage vegetables, including different varieties of tomatoes, as these have proved very popular with buyers in the past.  Several members grow these specially for the sale.

The Tools and Treasures yard sale includes all kinds of garden-related implements, tools, vases, pots, decorations, books and magazines.  It is held at the front of the Columbus Centre where visitors line up for the start of the sale.  Once the doors open at 9 o’clock, it is a busy scene with everything laid out for the buyer on a- first-come, first-served basis. Regular shoppers know that the best plants sell out very quickly – these are the healthiest, locally grown plants at the friendliest prices!   Where else can one buy really well established hostas for a few dollars?  This is  a gardener’s favourite, a perennial which has earned accolades by being both shade tolerant and very low maintenance.

This annual plant sale is a major fund-raiser, enabling the Club to program interesting speakers at its monthly meetings, and to provide an annual scholarship for a student graduating from a Cobourg high school who is pursuing post secondary education in horticulture or a related field.  In addition, a small amount of fundraising money helps us support the ongoing work our Club does at the Five Corners Millennium Garden.

The Club’s 160 members are all involved in some way in the plant sale, distributing flyers, digging and potting up plants, starting seeds, providing advice to buyers, or working on the organizing committee.

Everyone is welcome – but come early for the best selection!
