BRINGING PEOPLE TOGETHER: PETERBOROUGH CONCERT BAND FUNDRAISER SUPPORTS THE| NEW CANADIANS CENTRE

02:30 PM — 04:00 PM

As the New Canadians Centre (NCC) sees an exponential increase in the need for its services, the Peterborough
Concert Band (PCB) is joining it in a fundraising concert with all benefit dollars to be donated to NCC. The concert
will take place at Peterborough’s Market Hall on October 27th from 2:30 to 4:00 pm. In 2023-2024, more than 2,000
newcomers received assistance from the NCC. This was a 50% increase over the previous year and was the highest
number of clients ever. The number included 1216 new clients.
While Canada remains a global leader for welcoming newcomers, we are sobered by the local and global
challenges and conflicts affecting all of us and often the newcomer community even more acutely. The services the
NCC provides to clients are making resettlement in Peterborough a little more bearable. The top 10 countries from
which newcomers arrive are Syria, Ukraine, India, Afghanistan, Nigeria, Philippines, Iran, Mexico, and Pakistan.
The Peterborough Concert Band is one of the longest-running concert bands in Canada. Their Juno-nominated
conductor and composer, Saman Shahi, will lead the band through an exciting program of selections ranging from
classical to contemporary. Please join us for a celebratory reception hosted by NCC, working with local
Peterborough restaurants.
Don’t miss out on this wonderful opportunity to help the New Canadians Centre bring people together, and to make a
difference in our community! If you are a local business, please sponsor the concert or advertise in the concert
program. Following the performance there will be a reception organized by NCC. Tickets $34 (streaming $15) (both
prices include HST and fees).
Tickets are available through the Market Hall box office, or use the QR code on the poster, or online purchase at
https://www.markethall.org/

Peterborough Astronomy Club - Monthly Zoom and Live Meeting

06:00 PM — 09:00 PM

The Monthly Meeting of the Peterborough Astronomical Association's (PAA) will take place November 1st as a “Hybrid Meeting”, both online and in-person at our traditional physical location of the Rotary Education Centre/Guest Services Building, Riverview Park Zoo. Nothing can stop the spread of information and knowledge by the members of the PAA, including our ability to accommodate those that can’t physically be at the meeting. Our work around involves using a Zoom platform. To participate via Zoom, just make sure that in advance, you opened a (free) Zoom account on whatever iphone or tablet or device you wish to participate with and then contact  https://www.peterboroughastronomy.com/zoom_register.phpfor the password and link to our evenings classes and presentations.  If you wish to participate in person you are more than welcome to do so at the Zoo.

Our “Novice Astronomy Classes” are focused on the practical aspects of learning about astronomy. You will be introduced to astronomy related subjects at a very basic level, but in a logical sequence.  This month's session is a continuation of our Astronomy Class Series, Lesson 26 in the series, “Electronically Assisted Astronomy”. There is nothing like the experience of looking through an eyepiece, especially for the first time.  This is something everyone should partake in at least once in their lifetime.  For those that do, this can be a transformative event igniting a lifelong interest in astronomy and the wonders of the night sky.  As familiarity with the planets, Moon and deep sky objects grow, they may eventually desire to see them in greater detail and in colour.  Electronically Assisted Astronomy (EAA) is a path that can accomplish this desire.  The products available today make the transition easier than ever before.  In this month’s Novice Astronomy Class, we take a look at the advantages of EAA, what equipment choices are available and the astonishing plug and play operation some of these offerings exhibit.

In the second interactive portion of the class we will examine the often confused concepts of rotation and orbit.  Once again, volunteers from our audience will help demonstrate these celestial movements.  You are sure to come away with a better appreciation for bodies in motion and the resulting consequences they produce.

If you are even remotely interested, be on-line by 6:00 p.m. to see what you can learn about the Universe around you. The classes will run about 45 minutes each session, before our regular meeting resumes. There’s no obligation to stay for the meeting that follows, but you are more than welcome to if you wish.

Shortly after 7:00 p.m. we will have a presentation from member Dave Messervey entitled,“A Visit To Green Bank”.  This rather unique small town in the mountains of West Virginia is home to the world’s largest steerable radio telescope.  The talk will include features of the National Radio Quiet Zone in which the observatory is located, photographs of many of the telescopes in use at the observatory and a brief history of the development of radio astronomy. Whether joining us on-line or in-person you will not be disappointed and you will learn lots!

Why not check this out? You don’t need to be a member to see this presentation or anything else listed. The price is right…it costs you nothing but your time.

The Sky This Month will be posted on our club website for all to access.

There will also be the usual opportunities to have your questions answered, at no charge. All we ask is that you either come and see us in person at the Zoo or register in advance at https://www.peterboroughastronomy.com/zoom_register.php. This is an all ages meeting and  the venue is totally barrier free at the Zoo or just relax at home and “live and learn” as they say. Also, you don’t need a telescope to participate, but a curious mind helps.

PSO Season Opening Concert: Romantic Flames

07:30 PM — 09:30 PM

The Peterborough Symphony Orchestra (PSO) is excited to kick off their 2024-2025 season with a concert entitled "Romantic Flames" showcasing two of the most iconic romantic pieces, Dvorak’s Symphony no. 8 and Rachmaninov’s Third Piano Concerto.

Dvorak’s Symphony no. 8 is one of his most beloved works that is steeped in Czech folk rhythms and yearning melodies. Rachmaninov’s Third Piano Concerto, made famous through the movie “Shine,” is a show-stopper. We are thrilled that David Jalbert, one of Canada’s foremost piano virtuosos will bring the spark to this orchestral firework!

The concert will open with contemporary composer, Andrew Balfour’s “Pyotr’s Dream” which is influenced by the music of Tchaikovsky. Andrew is of Cree descent and based in Winnipeg. His work has been commissioned by several orchestras across Canada and we look forward to showcasing his music in Peterborough.

Arrive early (6:45 p.m.) and you will be treated to the “Meet the Maestro” informative and entertaining pre-concert talk that will give you a preview of the music you will hear.  To learn more about David or to get a sneak peek of this concert’s featured music, visit https://thepso.org/romantic-flames.

New this year is a flexible subscription package. There are 3 (“Your Choice”), 4 (“Flexible”) and 5 (“All In”) concert packages. Season subscriptions are now available with prices ranging from $95 - $245 depending on seating. Student subscriptions are only $10 per concert. Regular single ticket prices range from $33 - $55 and are available through our website.

Welcome one and all to a season of amazing music!

So what is “The Bowie Lives? www.youtube.com/watch?v=GcjjUehwk7E

The show was just fantastic! Michael Bell sounded more like Bowie than Bowie! The musicians were stellar and on top of their game. The choreography fit nicely with the delivery.  Michael's presentation was right on point... the full house loved the 'call and answer' segments and took part in the Show. And, there were even some audience members that dressed in costume and danced in the aisles!” ~ Pat Porter Radio Personality 4680 Q.

Saw the show last night in Toronto and was blown away. Was a little apprehensive at first as I have been a Bowie fan since I was a teen and I was concerned the band may not do the songs justice. I was overwhelmingly thrilled at what I heard and saw, from the first note I was hooked. The biggest takeaway is you can tell the lead singer is truly a devoted fan himself. Loved the way you honored David Bowie. Hope to see you in Toronto again real soon!”

What the industry has to say…

5 Stars! Unbelievable! I could have watched them for two more hours!” says Richard Crouse, CTV News, CP24, NewsTalk1010, and Host of CTV PopLife.

By far, the best & coolest Bowie Tribute I’ve seen!” says Sam Grosso,of Cadillac Productions.

“As close as it gets!” says MusikMirage.com

They’re all talking about the “The Bowie Lives” A Bowie Spectacular-Canada’s Sensational Tribute to David Bowie! Michael Bell is an award-winning vocalist who channels the sound and styles of David Bowie, and with the help of an all-star band, our multimedia, a theater, and costumes, he has captured the imagination of fans young and old.

Michael discovered Bowie as a teen and performed songs with a number of his early bands. By the 80’s his first theatrical production “ChangesAllBowie” toured the “A circuit” before hanging up his “Ziggy” in the early ’90s. Decades passed. After David’s untimely death on January 10, 2016, Michael’s calling returned; his calling to honor the man who helped shape his life. Together with musical director Michael Beauclerc, they began auditioning players to fill out a band capable of performing some of Rock’s most challenging material. The Bowie Lives bring all hits to the stage; Space Oddity to Lazarus, and everything in between.

The Bowie Lives PRE-SHOW includes the Bowie Bazaar; T-shirts, collectibles, LPs and DVDs, and more. Come dressed as your favorite David Bowie persona or wear your favorite swag and be rewarded! Don’t forget to grab a button!

Michael is also the subject of an upcoming documentary film “Being David Bowie” and an upcoming web series “The Bowie Lives.”
