Grand Avenue Encampment To Remain For Now
Despite opposition from local residents, Chatham’s largest homeless encampment is not expected to move in the near future. At a special meeting held Monday, Chatham-Kent Council reviewed a proposal from Mayor Darrin Canniff that suggested several amendments to the municipality’s Encampment Protocol. One key recommendation was to increase the minimum distance allowed between encampments and residential areas—from the current 10 metres to 100 metres. The meeting was prompted by the emergence of a homeless encampment on Chatham-Kent PUC property along Grand Avenue East. Nearby residents expressed alarm over rising incidents of crime, vandalism, and littering. Many of those now sheltering at the PUC site had previously occupied an encampment on Thames Street but were asked to leave due to upcoming infrastructure work along the Thames River. “Nobody wants an encampment near their home, but this motion increases the buffer from 10 metres to 100,” Canniff explained. According to CK staff, there are only two locations within Chatham that would be meet the requirements if distance restrictions are increased to more than 25 metres from a residential property — Thames Grove Conservation Area and the O’Neill Nature Preserve (formerly Paxton’s Bush.)
