In an effort to remove unsafe commercial vehicles from the road, an inspection blitz took place across Halton last week. It was part of a north American wide effort to make sure our roads are safe. The annual initiative ensures police check the mechanical fitness of all the the trucks that are pulled over... and also, the fitness of the drivers in terms of whether they are too tired to be on the road. After years of trying to slow down drivers on Martin street, the town of Milton is proposing a more assertive measure: installing speed cushions. Despite previous efforts -- including radar-equipped speed boards, targeted police enforcement, community safety zones and 'please slow down' lawn signs -- speeding remains a concern on the two-lane collector road, which has a posted speed limit of 50 km/h. A section near a school, drops to 40 km/h during specific times. Earlier this week, Jason Agnew asked Milton Mayor Gord Krantz if he thinks the speed cushions will be put in place.

The Canadian Club of Halton brings engaging speakers to the Oakville conference centre every month to share their expertise on a variety of topics. Their season, which starts in September, just concluded for the summer with a keynote about why you may not want to be famous.
