No Injuries following House Fire
Update from North Bay Fire Department
On December 29th, just after 11am firefighters from all three stations responded to a house fire at 53 Trillium Drive. Upon arrival the kitchen area of the home was fully engulfed in flame. Firefighters made entry to the home and made quick work extinguishing the fire without incident. One person was home at the time of the fire and suffered some burns trying to extinguish the fire herself. She was treated on scene by paramedics. The home has suffered significant damage due to the fire and smoke created by the fire. The cause of the fire is still under investigation and has not yet been determined. The home was going through some renovations, and the smoke alarms were removed for the construction. This is not an acceptable practice and against the law. Removing smoke alarms leaves residents unprotected and vulnerable in the event of an emergency. The homeowner has been charged with failing to maintain smoke alarms in their home.
Here are some tips for safely using candles during Christmas and throughout the year:
- Keep candles away from flammable items: Keep candles at least 12 inches away from anything that could catch fire, like curtains, lampshades, and cabinets.
- Never leave candles unattended: Always put out candles before leaving the room or going to bed.
- Use sturdy candle holders: Place candles in sturdy holders on a stable, uncluttered surface.
- Avoid using candles during power outages: Use flashlights or battery-powered lighting instead.
- Keep candles out of reach of children and pets: Make sure candles, matches, and lighters are out of the reach of children and pets.
- Use a snuffer or spoon to put out candles: Use a snuffer or spoon to put out candles instead of blowing them out.
- Use battery-operated candles: Battery-operated candles are a good alternative to real candles.
- Install smoke alarms: Ensure there are working smoke alarms on every level of the home and outside each sleeping area. Test and clean smoke alarms regularly and change batteries at least twice a year.
- Develop a fire escape plan: Have at least two ways out of your home and practice your fire escape plan regularly. Share this plan with guests as well #fire #smoke #emergency #emergencyresponse #firedept
