FORT ERIE (August 14, 2025)– On Monday, August 11, 2025, Fort Erie Town Council approved the municipality’s first Climate Change Action Plan, taking a significant step forward in protecting the community and environment for the future.
The plan was developed by Town staff across multiple departments, with valuable input from residents, community groups, and environmental partners. It outlines practical steps to adapt to climate change impacts and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, aligning directly with the Town’s Strategic Plan commitment to environmental and climate change resiliency.
Key actions in the plan include expanding the Town’s tree canopy, improving shoreline protection, promoting climate-friendly gardening, investing in active transportation (walking, cycling), and increasing public education and engagement. Many of these measures are already underway and will build on Fort Erie’s ongoing environmental initiatives.
“Climate change is not a far-off problem. It’s here. This plan is about more than policies; it’s about protecting our natural heritage assets for the enjoyment of all residents and thinking about our future generations. A great deal of work has gone into this, and I want to commend staff for their effort and dedication in bringing forward such a thorough Climate Change Action Plan. I appreciate the collaboration that went into making it happen.”
-Edward Terry - Manager of Policy and Community Planning
Implementing the Climate Change Action Plan will begin immediately, with short-term actions set to roll out over the next two years. Town staff will provide regular updates to Council and the public, ensuring transparency and opportunities for continued community input.
