In April the KFPL Live monthly speakers' series is excited to welcome Janet Fenton, the outreach program coordinator at Sandy Pines Wildlife Centre near Napanee.
Whether it's a bear cub with a face full of porcupine quills, a fawn attacked by a dog, or a turtle hit by a car, wild animals can often need human assistance. But how can we help without taking away their wildness? Every year in Ontario authorized wildlife rehabilitators provide temporary homes for thousands of injured and orphaned creatures. Sandy Pines has been taking in mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians since 1994, caring for them until they can be returned to the wild. The Centre also advises and assists property owners having trouble with wild animal neighbours. It also runs an outreach program to help educate the next generation on living together with wildlife. It receives no government funding and is entirely financed by donations and fundraising.
Janet will describe the wide range of animals the Centre has helped and say how she came to work there. She'll also talk about how to prevent wildlife injuries and what to do if we find an injured animal.
