NORTH BAY – Experience Near North Voices “Up Close and Personal”, April 6
Near North Voices – North Bay’s University-Community Choir is undertaking an adventure in democratic concert programming. For Near North Voices: Up Close and Personal, half of the concert will showcase choristers performing their favourite music in solos, duets, trios and small ensembles, with all of that music selected and prepared by the choristers themselves.
While many community ensembles have repertoire committees that select or advise on repertoire, this concert is an exploration of philosophical and methodological approaches to devolved musical decision making that move the locus of planning and problem-solving from the Artistic Director direct to individual members. This is one more step in Near North Voices’ efforts to engage its members as active, independently functioning musicians who, rather than being technicians of the conductor’s musical will, become active collaborators in musical performance.
The audience will be treated to a smorgasbord of styles and genres, including musical theatre, Classical and Romantic art song, opera and operetta, contemporary country music, musical comedy, international folk songs, and classic rock-pop. The other half of the concert will feature the full choir, as well as its Men’s and Women’s Ensembles, performing an eclectic mix of choral works with their usual flair.
Near North Voices: Up Close and Personal will take place on Saturday April 6, 2019, 7:30 p.m. at St. Andrew’s United Church, 399 Cassells St., North Bay. Tickets are $20 for adults, $10 for post-secondary students, and are available at The Farm and Creative Learning on Main St. and at the door. For further information, go to our website www.nearnorthvoices.com.
