Public Notices/Announcements - Windsor/Leamington - #WomenOnFire

#WomenOnFire, is a local initiative dreamed up by Donna Desantis, a City of Windsor Facilities Supervisor, Town of Tecumseh Volunteer Supervisor, and local champion for many initiatives and events aimed at educating, mentoring, advising and even training, young women interested in entering and succeeding at non-traditional employment opportunities in emergency response departments in Windsor and Essex County.

#WomenOnFire aims to promote diversity in the fire department as well as in other emergency responder organizations (such as EMS, OPP and Windsor Police, and CBSA) within Windsor Essex County, and including Chatham-Kent. This initiative will provide a female only recruitment training opportunity for women 18 years and older, to try out various components of each departments physical testing, ask questions, network with women already working with a fire department (from each municipality and Chatham), and to have an opportunity to mentor with these women if they choose.

The goal is to generate an interest in emergency response for women, and through this opportunity, it is hoped more women will be seen at recruitments passing the physical testing, particularly in some municipal departments where they have observed very few women come out for testing. This could help to turn those numbers around by closing the existing gap in mentoring, guiding, and demonstrating techniques to share with interested women.

Scheduled for Saturday June 16 at the Libro Center Rink A in Amherstburg, the day will incorporate three 2-hour sessions, 8:30-10:30am, 11am-1pm, and 1:30-3:30pm with a half hour break in between each session. Participants must bring their own water and appropriate attire and will be required to sign a waiver and provide proof of age (over 18) at time of sign in (max half hour before event starts).

There will be 15 openings per time slot, times 3 service providers (Fire; Police and OPP; EMS); the maximum participants at any session will be 45 total, (15 in each occupation).
