Plenty to see and do both outdoors on the picturesque grounds along the Niagara River’s edge, and inside the Niagara Pumphouse heritage brick building, the oldest surviving pump house in the Niagara Region. The abandoned water pumping station (circa 1891) was purchased by the Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake, and through community effort and fundraising the building was restored and converted to become the unique Niagara Pumphouse Arts Centre. The original pump, which once supplied water to the Town of Niagara on the Lake, remains on display in the garden.
A reprise of Cosmo's exhibit that was shown at the Pumphouse in June is again on display for most of August. If you haven't seen these evocative photographs, now is your opportunity to view them and dream of Sicily.
Cosmo is exhibiting his recent work from Sicily, Italy. The island has been a cultural melting pot of Italic, Greeks, Roman, Byzantines, Saracens, Normans, Swabians, Aragonese, Lombards, Spanish, French and Albanians. Sicily has retained the architecture of these societies and it is greatly evident in the culinary offerings mixing North African cuisine with Middle Eastern and European.
The artist feels that the background story and the photography is a good example of cultural influences, identity, geography, language and community. Cosmo also experimented on a new photographic style with some of the imagery, which elevated his work to a new dimension.
It is the artist's belief that the exhibit will open a conversation as to what different cultures melting together can achieve considering the current situation with refugees and immigration.
