In honour of Black History Month, the Chimczuk Museum will be offering free admission on February 1. This date marks the official opening of the new temporary display, “Breaking the Colour Barrier: Wilfred ‘Boomer’ Harding and the Chatham Coloured All-Stars.” This display tells the story of the Chatham, Ontario baseball team that became the first black team to win an Ontario Baseball Amateur Association championship in 1934.

In the evening, there will be a free talk at the Chimczuk Museum hosted by the Museum Volunteer Group. This talk will feature Dr. Miriam Wright and Dr. Heidi Jacobs from the University of Windsor, who directed the Breaking the Colour Barrier project, and Dave Johnston of the Leddy Library who created the project website. In addition, sets of baseball cards featuring the Chatham Coloured All-Stars will be available for sale with proceeds going to the Chatham Kent Black Historical Society. Doors open at 6:30pm with the talk getting underway at 7pm.

This temporary display is a great compliment to the Underground Railroad content currently featured in the Museum’s permanent exhibit: The River and the Land Sustain Us.

Public Announcement - Windsor/Leamington - Dog Tags Now Available

Calling all canines and their companions! 2018 dog tags and licences are now available from the Town of Essex.

Dog owners can purchase and pay for their tags at Essex Town Hall (33 Talbot Street South, Essex Centre) and The Computer Centre (45 King Street East, Unit 2, Harrow Centre).

Owners of previously-licenced dogs should have received a reminder by mail in early January. New dog owners are reminded to fill out their applications as soon as possible, as fees increase on April 1.

Until that date, tags for spayed and neutered dogs will cost $15. Tags for unspayed and unneutered dogs will cost $25. After April 1, the fee doubles to $30 and $50 respectively. After July 1, the fee triples from the original price to $45 and $75. Tags for service and police dogs are provided at no charge.

“In the case of dog tags, the earlier the better,” says Chief Administrative Officer Donna Hunter. “Tags ensure that owners are reunited with lost dogs, and the funds raised help support dog parks and other animal control programs in our community.”

Dog owners are also reminded of the other requirements outlined in the Town’s Animal Care and Control By-law. Residents are allowed a maximum of three dogs per household. Dogs and other animals cannot be tethered or chained for longer than ten hours. Owners are also banned from driving with an animal in the back of an open pickup truck and from leaving an animal in a car when the temperature is too hot or cold.

For more information on Dog Tags, please visit www.essex.ca/pets or call 519-776-7336 extension 0.
