The Town of Essex, in collaboration with the Essex Municipal Heritage Committee, has officially announced their Heritage Week event line-up, happening from February 20 to 22.

Each February throughout the province, Heritage Week raises awareness of heritage sites within communities and recognizes organizations, residents, and volunteers working to protect Ontario's unique heritage resources.

This year’s theme, “Heritage Stands the Test of Time," aims to connect Town history with the modern era.

On Tuesday, February 20, two Town residents will receive Heritage Preservation Awards at the Regular Council Meeting starting at 6pm at the Essex Civic Centre. Both residents have demonstrated a dedication to protecting and celebrating local heritage.

On Wednesday, February 21, at 1:00pm at the Essex Train Station (87 Station Street, Essex Centre,) Bill Brundage will give a presentation on the restoration of the Boblo Island Blockhouse. The blockhouse was constructed to keep a lookout on Canadian rebels and American sympathizers looking to invade Canada during the rebellions of 1837-1838. Brundage and a team of volunteers have worked diligently since 2010 to restore the blockhouse.

On Thursday, February 22, at 5:00pm at the Harrow and Colchester South Community Centre (243 McAffee Street, Harrow Centre) members of the public are invited to bring in their historic documents, photos and projector slides for a scan-a-thon.  This is a chance to help further the preservation of local and family history.

Following the scan-a-thon, at 6:30pm residents are invited to Seamus Gunn’s presentation on the first 30 years of Confederation. As the second part of his wildly popular presentation from 2017, Gunn brings an engaging first-person story-telling style to describe the birth of our country.

New this year, the Town has created a free Heritage colouring book for kids. The colouring book aims to educate and engage all ages in the importance of heritage preservation.

The City of Windsor is making plans to complete development of the Festival Plaza on Windsor’s central waterfront, and we want your input. The festival plaza plays host to over 20 concerts and special events each year that are attended by thousands of residents and visitors, but there’s still room for more. Permanent building features, amenities, landscape greening and trails are all in the works to fulfill the vision set out for the plaza in the City’s Central Riverfront Implementation Plan (CRIP). We want to hear what you think about the concept plans. This meeting is an opportunity to review the plans and provide ideas and suggestions:

City staff will be on hand to discuss the project, collect information and provide the proposed schedule for development.

The City of Windsor 2018 Interim property tax bills have been mailed. If you have not received your tax bills by February 5, 2018 or have questions in regards to the amount of the bill, please call 311(alternate: 519-255-2489) or 1-877-746-4311 for toll-free long distance.

Please note that failure to receive a tax bill does not exempt property owners from paying their taxes. Penalties and interest (which can add up to 15% of the taxes on an annual basis) will be added for late payments.

Walkerville Centre for the Creative Arts has partnered with The University of Windsor School of Dramatic Art and Stratford Off The Wall in the creation of the set, props, masks and armour for WCCA’s upcoming play The Trojan Women. The Town of Tecumseh, in partnership with local veterinary hospitals/clinics, is pleased to once again provide its Cat Spay and Neuter Voucher Program (Program) beginning Friday, February 9, 2018. This Program is available to residents of the Town of Tecumseh, only.

In an effort to reduce the number of feral cats in the Town, 95 Vouchers will be issued to sterilize cats. The Vouchers are valued at $50 each.

Vouchers for owned cats are reserved for low-income families. A declaration of income will be required. A maximum of three (3) Vouchers will be issued where the cats are owned (3 available). For feral cat caregivers, a maximum of five (5) Vouchers will be issued (92 available), with no income restrictions.

Applications for the 2018 Spay and Neuter Voucher Program will be available at the Town Hall during regular office hours, Monday to Friday 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, or on the Town’s website. Those who meet the eligibility criteria will be issued a Voucher(s) starting February 9, 2018. Please note that Vouchers are issued on a first come, first serve basis.
