HELPING HANDS WALK-A-THON

The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 644 at 1570 Marentette Avenue in Windsor is having a Halloween Dance Party on Saturday the 29th of October from 8:00 PM to 12:00 AM. Live music by Power & The Glory. Food & Prizes.

Orchestra Kingston and Kingston Choral Society perform together at The Spire

100-strong Concert for Peace

Two of Kingston’s popular musical forces, Orchestra Kingston and the Kingston Choral Society join together in a 100-strong Concert for Peace, at The Spire, Sunday 13 November 2022, 2:30pm. 

In this, their sixth collaboration, the 100 performers have decided to focus, appropriately this year, on global peace.

Ian Juby, artistic director of the Kingston Choral Society and his musical colleague, John Palmer music director of Orchestra Kingston, sat down together recently to discuss their Concert for Peace. 

Earning remarkable reviews for their “almost psychedelic” musical colour and performance energy together (-Lucy DeCoutere, Kingston Whig-Standard), the choir and orchestra have chosen to present a deeply moving program, including: 

Mussorgsky, “Great Gate of Kiev”;

John Williams, Hymn,“Saving Private Ryan”; Theme, “Schindler’s List”;

Jake Runestad, “Flower into Kindness”; 

Mark Sirett, “Things That Never Die”;

John Palmer, “Lament”

Mozart, Lacrimosa, from The  “Requiem”;

Brahms, “Geistliches Lied”, “Eternal Father”;

Sibelius, “Finlandia”; and,

Bach, “Dona Nobis Pacem”.

“Every time John and I bring the orchestra and choir together,” Ian Juby comments, “it’s a unique thrill.” John Palmer agrees,  adding, “A huge group like this gives the performers energy. And the audience can feel that energy.” Palmer and Juby invite the Kingston community to “come out and experience this big sound as we experience it.”

Note that in their previous five outings together, Orchestra Kingston and the Kingston Choral Society consistently sold out every one of over 800 seats in The Performance Hall at The Spire, 82 Sydenham Street, downtown Kingston.

After more than 60 years, the Kingston Choral Societycontinues to occupy a special place in the Kingston music scene. Artistic Director Ian Jubyhas led the choir for the past 20 years, and has recently moved the scope of the repertoire beyond the choral masterworks and extended classics which have been the group’s mainstay. Recent programs showcased works by living composers from Canada and around the world. KCS is a proud member of the Kingston Symphony Association.

Orchestra Kingstonproudly acknowledges the sponsorship support of The Kingston Arts Council and City of Kingston. Conducted by music directorJohn Palmer, continues to present concerts featuring a wide range of musical genres, Canadian composers,  community ensembles, and professional soloists. The orchestra provides an opportunity for experienced, amateur musicians in the Kingston area to play orchestral repertoire under the baton of a professional music director.

Holly Bazaar and Lunch at Holy Trinity Anglican Church (68 Renfrew St., Pembroke) on Thursday, Nov. 10th from 10:30 am to 1:00 pm. Bake table, Knitting and Handicrafts, Re-Gifting (mainly Christmas articles), Outdoor Christmas Planters. Luncheon ($12/person) starts at 11:00 am with homemade soup, sandwiches, cottage pudding with lemon or butterscotch sauce and tea or coffee. Elevator available.
